The doses researchers actually used

Ginger is one of the most studied culinary herbs. An overview of 109 randomized controlled trials found its most consistent human effect in nausea and vomiting, with mixed findings for inflammation, pain, blood sugar and blood lipids [1]. Doses across those trials typically ranged from about half a gram to a few grams of ginger a day. For pregnancy nausea, a meta-analysis found ginger better than placebo, with typical daily amounts around a gram [2].

The only human airway study gave adults with uncontrolled asthma 1 gram of ginger twice a day for 28 days; daily symptom scores improved compared with placebo while exhaled nitric oxide did not change [3]. It built on laboratory work showing ginger compounds relaxing human airway muscle [4].

How much ginger is in ginger products?

Approximate amounts
ProductTypical ginger per daily servingCompared with the asthma pilot (2,000 mg)
Ginger capsule250 to 550 mg each4 to 8 capsules to match
Fresh ginger tea (2 cm slice)a few grams of fresh rootvariable; mostly water-extracted
Crystallized gingera few grams per servinghigh in sugar
Breathiterol spray, 4 sprays77 mg at most (label order)under 4%

Fresh and dried ginger are not interchangeable gram for gram, and extracts vary widely in concentration. Labels that list a gingerol percentage tell you more than labels that list only weight.

Safety at higher doses

Ginger is generally safe in food amounts; at supplement doses the common complaints are heartburn, burping and stomach upset [7]. A systematic review found the evidence on platelets inconsistent [5], but people on anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, and those facing surgery, should check with a clinician before taking concentrated ginger. Europe's herbal committee recognizes ginger for motion sickness and, on tradition only, for cold symptoms [6].

The takeaway

If ginger is the reason you are interested in a breathing product, look at how much ginger it actually contains. A spray that combines ginger with other extracts inside a 154 mg blend offers a taste of ginger, not a research dose. That may be fine for a daily ritual; it is not the same as the amounts tested in people.

More questions on this page

Can I take ginger every day?

Most adults can use food amounts daily. At supplement doses, watch for heartburn, and check with a clinician if you take blood thinners, have gallstones or are scheduled for surgery.

Is fresh ginger better than an extract?

Neither is simply better. Fresh ginger contains more gingerols, dried ginger more shogaols, and extracts vary in strength. Look for a stated amount of ginger or gingerols on the label.
